Abstract
There are parts of Asia where the press is relatively free depending on the political system, history, cultural and social traditions and ethnic and religious make-up. In certain Asian countries, the colonial legacy of democratic values and norms has made the transition from colonial status to independence fairly smooth. Under such conditions, the press has a better chance to co-exist, albeit often uneasily, with the state.
