Abstract

Peers play an important role as sources of support, social influence, and catalysts for character development among students. Within the context of spiritual education, peers function not only as providers of information but also as direct mentors through daily interactions that may influence students’ beliefs, religious practices, and moral conduct. In this regard, the present study aimed to identify the need for developing an Islamic Psychospiritual Education Model for Peer Mentoring (MPPIRS) in polytechnics. This study employed a mixed-method design during the needs analysis phase of the Design and Development Research (DDR) approach. In the qualitative phase, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three informants. Meanwhile the quantitative process data were obtained through the distribution of questionnaire to 367 polytechnic students. The findings revealed that the students demonstrated a very high level of aqidah practices (M = 4.54), a high level of ibadah practices (M = 3.86), and a moderate level of akhlak practices (M = 3.31). In addition, the need for developing MPPIRS was found to be very high (M = 4.24, SD = 0.65). The triangulation of quantitative and qualitative findings further confirmed the need for an Islamic psychospiritual education model grounded in the dimensions of aqidah, ibadah, and akhlak through the approaches of mujāhadah al-nafs and riyāḍah al-nafs. In conclusion, the findings provide important preliminary empirical evidence supporting the development of MPPIRS as a systematic Islamic psychospiritual education framework to strengthen students’ spiritual development through peer mentoring in polytechnic institutions.
