Although the Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI) stipulates the provisions of inheritance distribution based on the faraid principle, the practice in the field shows a variety of interpretations and modifications influenced by social structure, local culture, and family dynamics. This research uses a qualitative approach with interviews, observation, and documentation studies on inheritance practices in several Muslim communities, and the data were analysed using thematic analysis through stages of data reduction, coding, categorization, and interpretation to identify emerging patterns and findings. The results show that the norms of Islamic inheritance law undergo transformation when dealing with the patriarchal system, social status, and education level. In addition, there is a pattern of adaptation through family deliberation that emphasises harmony and substantive justice, as well as resistance from those who adhere to the textual interpretation of sharia. The roles of religious leaders, the state and the family are significant in mediating between ideal norms and social practices. The maqāṣid sharia approach is seen as an alternative to reconstruct Islamic inheritance law that is more contextual and responsive to the needs of social justice. This research concludes that inheritance distribution is not only a matter of legal compliance, but also an arena for negotiating values, power and identity in Indonesian Muslim society.
2025-12-15T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studieshttps://jrmg.um.edu.my/index.php/RIS/article/view/64151The Ulama and Jihad: Examining Ibn ‘Asakir’s Role in the Narrative of Bayt al-Maqdis’ Liberation During Nur al-Din Mahmud Zanki’s Era2025-11-12T03:04:26+08:00Mohamad Fikri Mohd Bakriiik190010@siswa.um.edu.myMohd Roslan Mohd Norm_roslan@um.edu.myShu'aibu Umar Gokarugokaru@um.edu.my
The fall of Bayt al-Maqdis to the Franks in 1099 CE during the First Crusade was a significant setback for the Islamic world, exacerbated by political fragmentation and sectarian divisions, particularly between Sunni and Shi‘a factions. In response, several Muslim leaders rose to reclaim the city, culminating in its liberation by Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi in 1187 CE. However, this success was not solely due to military leadership, it was a collective effort involving various groups, including religious scholars (ulama), whose contributions are often overlooked. This study examines the crucial role of Ibn ‘Asakir (d. 1176 CE), a distinguished scholar and historian from Damascus, in shaping the narrative of Bayt al-Maqdis’s liberation. Through his works, including Ta’rikh Dimashq (History of Damascus) and his sermons, he reinforced the legitimacy of jihad against the Crusaders. His teachings on hadith, Sunni unity, and religious duty helped frame jihad as a collective obligation under the leadership of Nur al-Din Mahmud Zanki. Using a historical research framework, this study analyses relevant sources thematically. The findings indicate that Ibn ‘Asakir’s efforts to counter Shi‘a influence and uphold Sunni orthodoxy were strategic moves to ensure political and military solidarity. By integrating theology, history, and political advocacy, he positioned the liberation of Bayt al-Maqdis not just as a military goal but as a religious obligation linked to Sunni identity and spiritual salvation.
2025-12-15T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studieshttps://jrmg.um.edu.my/index.php/RIS/article/view/66056Family Resilience Based on the Integration of Maqāṣid Al-Syarī'ah in the Prevention of Child Grooming in Indonesia2025-11-30T10:33:46+08:00Asmanasman.as796@gmail.com
The phenomenon of child grooming, which is a manipulative process carried out by perpetrators to build children's trust for the purpose of sexual and psychological exploitation, is increasingly prominent in Indonesia along with the massive use of digital technology and social media by children and adolescents. In the context of national law, prevention efforts are often still reactive, focused on enforcement after a crime has occurred, and have not fully involved the family as the main protective unit. In fact, the family is the first bastion in child protection and has a strategic role in building moral, emotional, and digital resilience for children. This study aims to analyze how the integration of the principles of Maqāṣid al-Syarī'ah, especially ḥifẓ al-nafs (protection of the soul), ḥifẓ al-'aql (protection of intellect), and ḥifẓ al-nasl (protection of offspring) can strengthen family resilience while improving child grooming prevention strategies in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach and normative analysis of maqāṣid al-syarī'ah literature, the concept of family resilience, and child protection policies, this study found that the integration of maqāṣid al-syarī'ah was able to provide a philosophical and operational basis for a more holistic preventive approach. The integration encourages the formation of prevention strategies that include strengthening the parenting function, character education with an Islamic perspective, increasing the digital literacy of school parents, strengthening regulations and collaboration between institutions, and activating the role of religious communities. This finding confirms that the prevention of child grooming is not only a legal issue, but also a moral-religious mandate that places the family as the main pillar in maintaining the welfare of children's souls, intellect, and offspring.
2025-12-15T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studieshttps://jrmg.um.edu.my/index.php/RIS/article/view/61875Sumbangan Amalan Khuruj dalam Pembinaan Sahsiah Golongan Masturat Jemaah Tabligh: Kajian dari Perspektif Sunnah 2025-06-18T22:30:35+08:00Adibah Bashir Ahmadadibahbashir@gmail.comKhadher Ahmadkhadher82@um.edu.my
This study aims to examine the contribution of khuruj practice among the Masturat group in shaping personal character (sahsiah) based on the values rooted in the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The main focus of the study is to explore how khuruj, as practiced by Masturat in the Tablighi Jamaat, aligns with Prophetic principles and the mechanisms by which it contributes to the moral and spiritual development of Muslim women. Khuruj refers to voluntary preaching efforts over a specific period, emphasizing the sacrifice of time, wealth, and energy to strengthen one’s faith and righteous deeds. It is a key component of the Tablighi movement that also involves women through structured activities such as religious study circles (halaqah), recitation of Fadhail A’mal, daily dhikr, and house-to-house women’s outreach. This study adopts a qualitative approach through documentation and library research methods, utilizing secondary sources such as previous scholarly works, classical Islamic texts, and references from the Sunnah. It aims to address the question of how khuruj functions as a platform for internalizing Islamic values such as humility (tawadhu’), moderation, obedience, and sacrifice, and how these values are practically integrated into the daily lives of Muslim women. The analysis focuses on the spiritual and ethical transformation experienced by women through consistent involvement in Sunnah-based practices. Findings indicate that khuruj significantly contributes to the formation of Masturat’s character, not only in strengthening aqidah (creed) and ibadah (worship), but also in nurturing disciplined, patient, and responsible women who are committed to their roles as wives, mothers, and community members. This study provides deeper insights into the role of women in the context of the Tablighi Jamaat’s missionary efforts and offers an alternative perspective on Islamic character development grounded in the Sunnah.
2025-12-15T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studieshttps://jrmg.um.edu.my/index.php/RIS/article/view/60900Penggunaan Landskap Perkhidmatan di Premis Makanan dan Implikasinya Terhadap Industri Halal di Malaysia 2025-06-06T20:45:04+08:00Nor 'Azzah Kamriazzah@um.edu.myNurain Fatini Adnanfatiniiadnan@gmail.comAisyah Muhamad Talmizitalmiziaisyah@gmail.com
The halal industry in Malaysia has expanded significantly, particularly in the food sector, where certification by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) plays a vital role in ensuring halal integrity. Despite this, there are Muslim consumers continue to patronize food premises without valid halal certification. This situation raises the possibility of inadvertent consumption of forbidden (haram) or doubtful (syubhah) products. In such contexts, the servicescape is believed to influence consumer perception and decision-making. This article explores the concept of the servicescape and how it can either support or contaminate halal assurance by shaping consumer perceptions. Through a qualitative literature review, the study identifies two types of servicescape: physical and social, each encompassing various influencing elements. The study also reveals how these elements influence consumers’ trust and decision-making, especially in the absence of visible halal logos. Findings indicate that servicescape may mislead Muslim consumers by projecting a halal image which is not grounded in official certification. The study underscores the importance of Muslim consumer discernment by prioritizing food premises that display the official halal logo and calls for greater reliance on certified premises to uphold the credibility of the halal industry.
2025-12-15T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studieshttps://jrmg.um.edu.my/index.php/RIS/article/view/60895Teori Keqadiman Alam: Kajian Perbandingan Antara Kosmologi Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī dan Kosmologi Ibn Taymiyyah2025-06-06T20:47:38+08:00Mohd Saiful Aqil Naim Saful Aminmohdsaifalsiddiqi01@gmail.comWan Adli Wan Ramliwanadli@um.edu.mySyed Mohammad Hilmi Syed Abdul Rahman smhilmi@um.edu.my
The ontological status of this universe is one of the main cosmological discussion in Islamic tradition. Acting as an antithesis to the theory of the pre-eternity of the universe proposed by the philosophers, the scholars of kalam summarize various arguments to prove the novelty of the universe and refute the claims of the pre-eternity of the universe which are said to be burhānī in status. Interestingly, in this matter, the theory of the pre-eternity of the universe serves as a meeting point between two figures from different schools and lines of thought, namely Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d. 606 H), a kalam and tafsir scholar from the Ash‘arī school, and Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728 H), a hadith scholar from the Ḥanbalī school, both of whom oppose this theory. Considering the potential variety of kalam arguments that can be utilized, this study aims to examine the positions of al-Rāzī and Ibn Taymiyyah and their responses to the theory of the pre-eternity of the universe. This literature-based study uses document analysis methods to obtain sufficient data for formulating their positions. Data were collected through scholarly books, theses, texts, and academic articles. The study found that both figures strongly reject the belief that this universe has no beginning for each of its entities (afrād), but they disagree on the ontological status of the universal concept (naw‘) of this universe, where al-Rāzī believes it is also has a beginning, while Ibn Taymiyyah believes otherwise. They were also found to have different views on the chain of creation of the universe, but they agree in criticizing the causality theory (ta‘līl) of philosophers on this issue. This indirectly shows that the use of kalām and philosophy in the theological issues is something that cannot be avoided by any figures involved in sophisticated theological issues. This study also has the potential to provide a new lens in the discourse of the debate between Islamic streams, particularly between Ash'ariyyah and Salafiyyah-Wahhābiyyah, and to show the variations of dialectical methods in cosmological issues that can be utilized in contemporary cosmological issues.
2025-12-15T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studieshttps://jrmg.um.edu.my/index.php/RIS/article/view/62668Membina Semula Tadbir Urus Islam: Sintesis Falsafah Ketuhanan, Institusi dan Sejarah2025-08-02T23:57:33+08:00Ibrahim Majdi Mohd Kamilibrahimmajdi@usm.myAzman Yusofazmanyusof@unikl.edu.myMohd Kamarul Amree Mohd Sarkamkamarul@upnm.edu.myAmran Muhammadamran1551@gmail.comRahimin Affandi Abdul Rahimfaqir_ila_rabbih@um.edu.my
This paper examines the philosophical foundations of Islamic governance as a value system integrates divine principles, institutional structures, and historical trajectories. It aims to reconstruct a conceptual framework that synthesizes tawhid with institutional design, offering a normative basis for reform rather than evaluating any specific polity’s empirical performance. Using a qualitative and reflective approach, the study combines philosophical analysis with institutional–historical inquiry, drawing on three primary sources: an articulation of Islamic Good Corporate Governance (IGCG), scholarship on religion corruption dynamics, and an edited volume on colonial and post-colonial governance of Islam. Data were analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke, with reflexivity and cross-source triangulation enhancing trustworthiness. Findings reveal four interrelated themes: first, tawhid as the ontological and epistemological anchor of authority, responsibility (amānah), justice (ʿadl), and welfare (maṣlaḥah), positioning governance as a moral and spiritual mandate. Second, structural blind spots in secular-utilitarian paradigms that prioritize technical efficiency while neglecting ethical coherence. Third, the path-dependent transformation of Syariah courts, zakat administration, and religious education under colonial rule, which narrowed Islam’s institutional autonomy and moral scope and fourth, the operationalization of ethics through IGCG principles which are transparency, accountability, responsibility, independence, and fairness bridging normative ideals with institutional practice. The paper concludes that reconstructing Islamic governance requires a critical philosophical approach and a historically informed institutional reform strategy that embeds maqāṣid al-sharīʿah within governance mechanisms. Recommendations include phased reforms through value–practice audits, revitalization of religious institutions as moral guardians, and restoring bounded autonomy to key governance structures. Future research should test this framework across diverse contexts and develop measurable indicators of value congruence to ensure governance systems are effective, ethical, and spiritually grounded.
2025-12-15T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studieshttps://jrmg.um.edu.my/index.php/RIS/article/view/66256Understanding Emotion Regulation Among Single Mothers in Malaysia: A Thematic Analysis Through the Lense of Nabawi Practices2025-12-02T16:51:24+08:00SITI AIDAH TULIMINsitiaidah159@gmail.comRoshimah Shamsudinroshimah@usm.my
Single motherhood in Malaysia is often accompanied by emotional, social, and psychological challenges that require continuous emotional regulation. In navigating the demands of caregiving, financial responsibility, and social expectations, single mothers employ various strategies to manage emotions such as anger, sadness, and distress. This qualitative study explores how single mothers in Malaysia regulate their emotions amidst the challenges of single parenthood. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with six participants, thematic analysis revealed a dual approach to emotion regulations which are personal coping strategies such screaming and throwing objects, and faith-based practices such as performing prayer (solat), remembrance (dhikr), and Qur'anic recitation, which reflecting Nabawi methods of managing emotions. These findings suggest a significant integration between the mothers’ lived personal experiences and the emotional regulation strategies modeled by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) underscoring the significance of faith-based practices in the psychological resilience of Muslim single mothers. Throughout this research, it highlights the integration of psychological self-regulation with spiritual resilience, contributing to a deeper understanding of culturally and religiously embedded coping strategies among Muslim women. This study contributes to the understanding of culturally and religiously informed coping mechanisms, offering insights for mental health practitioners working within Islamic contexts. Implications are discussed for mental health practitioners, religious counsellors, and support systems working with Muslim single mothers.
2025-12-15T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studieshttps://jrmg.um.edu.my/index.php/RIS/article/view/60959Legal Capacity of Marriage and Guardianship of Disabled Person in Pakistani, Islamic, and International Law2025-06-03T15:10:02+08:00Dr Hafiz Falak Shair Faizifalak.shair@skt.umt.edu.pkSadia Zain Iftikharsadia.zain1994@gmail.com
Recently, a bill was passed by the National Assembly of Pakistan regarding the rights of disabled people in Pakistan, and there are many developments in international law to protect the rights of disabled people. In this study, I will discuss all the family rights of disabled persons in Islamic, Pakistani, and international law. Unfortunately, people on various levels of the handicap spectrum face many problems, and one of the greatest among these is financial difficulty. In this context, the study targets several objectives, such as critically analysis the role of society and government in working together to pursue a coordinated approach towards ensuring family and individual security according to Islamic law; evaluating the existing position and improvement in institutional mechanisms for disabled persons; examining existing laws in other countries regarding disputes and issues arising in families of disabled persons; constituting a mechanism to prevent conflicts between families and individuals by addressing the problems of disabled persons and suggesting progressive solutions; and promoting a supportive family culture for disabled persons in Pakistan. The research is descriptive and qualitative in nature, based on the theoretical framework of UN Articles, constitutional rights, Quranic verses, and Ahadith related to family matters. Provincial and regional enforcement procedures will be comparatively reviewed. An analytical and critical approach will be adopted to examine issues related to loopholes in legal and social systems. Relevant books will also be consulted. The research includes official and secondary sources such as law magazines, journals, articles, commentaries, blogs, general comments, international jurisprudence, and human rights documents. Internet sources will also be used for data collection. Together, these form the secondary sources of the thesis. Significant efforts have been made to achieve the goal of integrating Islamic values with modern knowledge through academic curricular, student activities, and various approaches. While numerous studies have examined the experience of Islamization of Knowledge at IIUM, there remains a notable gap concerning students' perceptions of the effectiveness of this implementation. Therefore, this study aims to analyze IIUM students' perceptions towards the effectiveness of the implementation of Islamization of Knowledge at the university. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to 55 students from the Kulliyyah of Sustainable Tourism and Contemporary Languages, IIUM Pagoh Campus. The findings reveal several important results: first, students demonstrated a high level of awareness regarding the significance of the Islamization implementation, indicating the university’s success in promoting the concept among its students. Second, Islamization has an impact on students’ lives, as they expressed a strong sense of commitment to upholding Islamic values in all academic content learned. Third, the effectiveness of the Islamization process largely depends on lecturers’ understanding of the concept and their approach to integrating it in teaching. In light of these findings, the study recommends future research to assess lecturers’ level of understanding and implementation of the Islamization of Knowledge within the classroom context.
2025-12-15T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studieshttps://jrmg.um.edu.my/index.php/RIS/article/view/63447توظيف المنهج المقاصدي في توجيه العمل الوقفي نحو دعم التعليم العالي في مصر2025-11-12T07:10:14+08:00Rawda Hajjorawdahajjo2@gmail.comLuqman Haji Abdullahluqmanabdullah@um.edu.myAmeen Ahmed Abdullah Qasem Al-Nahari alnahari1977@um.edu.my

Abstract

The Maqāṣid-based methodology represents one of the most significant juristic approaches guiding contemporary ijtihād, modern issues, and Sharīʿah-based public policies, including waqf policies. Higher education institutions in Egypt also face major challenges, foremost among them insufficient funding, which necessitates the activation of a sustainable waqf system.
2025-12-15T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studieshttps://jrmg.um.edu.my/index.php/RIS/article/view/61106منهج أهل السنة والجماعة في تحقيق مقصد حفظ المجتمع: تأصيل شرعي وتطبيق معاصر في النموذج الماليزي2025-06-29T01:00:43+08:00Maged Abdulllah Mohammed Hamidmajidhumai9@gmail.comSyed Mohammad Hilmi Syed Abdul Rahmansmhilmi@um.edu.myMohammad Abdelhamid Salem Qatawnehqatawneh@um.edu.my

Abstract

This study derives its significance from addressing one of the central challenges of contemporary Islamic thought: the need to establish a balanced and authoritative Sunni framework capable of reducing internal fragmentation and offering a practical model for managing society amidst religious and cultural diversity. The research analyzes the methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah—encompassing Ashʿarism and Māturīdism in creed, the four Sunni legal schools in jurisprudence, and Sunni Sufism in ethical conduct—as an integrated epistemic paradigm for operationalizing Sharīʿah through its higher objective (maqāṣid) dimension, particularly the objective of preserving social cohesion and community stability. The study aims to develop a Sharia-based foundation for the objective of preserving society in light of this methodology and examines its practical application in the Malaysian model. It further analyzes institutional mechanisms, state policies, and the factors contributing to the success of Malaysia’s centrist Sunni approach, while also identifying significant challenges related to freedom of belief, religious discrimination, and managing pluralism. Employing a descriptive-analytical methodology, the research combines scriptural analysis, juristic reasoning, and empirical observation. It provides a comprehensive exploration of the concept of preserving society as a maqṣad, by examining relevant textual evidence and scholarly contributions that emphasize the balance between creed, jurisprudence, and spiritual ethics within the Sunni tradition. The analysis of the Malaysian case demonstrates how the official adoption and institutionalization of the Sunni middle-path have contributed to social harmony and communal stability. The study concludes that centrist Sunni theology—rooted in moderation, tolerance, and balance—constitutes a pivotal foundation for sustaining secure and multi-ethnic societies. It recommends reinforcing the maqṣad of preserving society within religious and legal discourse and adopting successful moderate models that harmonize Islamic authenticity with civilizational openness.
2025-12-15T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studies
